What Is Mesothelioma Cancer

Mesothelioma Cancer, which is also referred to as malignant mesothelioma or mesothelioma is a rare cancer type occurring in the thin tissue layer covering most of our internal organs or the mesothelium. This cancer type has several subtypes; the categorization of the subtypes is done based on which portion of mesothelium has been affected by cancer.

Mesothelioma most commonly occurs in the tissue surrounding the lungs, which is medically termed as pleura; this mesothelioma type is known as pleural mesothelioma. In rare cases, mesothelioma occurs in the abdominal tissues (peritoneal mesothelioma), tissues surrounding the testicles (mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis) and tissues surrounding the heart (pericardial mesothelioma).

The common signs of pleural mesothelioma might include: difficulty in breathing, painful coughing, sudden weight loss, chest pain (in the region under rib cage), appearance of lumps beneath the skin covering the chest etc. Peritoneal mesothelioma is marked by signs like pain and swelling in the abdomen, formation of lumps in abdomen, weight loss etc.

Mesothelioma symptoms for other mesothelioma types are mostly unclear. The truth is that, being extremely rare compared to the above two mesothelioma types, medical science has still not gathered enough info about the signs of mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis and pericardial mesothelioma. There are instances, when pericardial mesothelioma has resulted in symptoms like chest pain and breathing difficulties. Mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis, on the other hand, can lead to formation of a mass in the patient's testicle.

If mesothelioma is diagnosed in its early stage, the condition is mostly treated with surgery. If removing the entire mesothelioma affected part of the patient's body is not possible, the surgeon targets reducing the symptoms of mesothelioma. The surgical options used for the treatment of mesothelioma are:

  • Surgery for decreasing fluid buildup: This procedure is mostly used for treating pleural mesothelioma.
  • Surgery for removing tissues surrounding abdomen and lungs: This surgical procedure is used for treating both pleural mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma.
  • Debulking: In this surgical procedure, the surgeon tries to remove as much cancer affected organ or tissue as possible. Debulking is used for all mesothelioma types, especially if the disease is diagnosed at a very early stage.
  • Surgery for removing one of the lungs along with its surrounding tissues: This is another frequently used surgical procedure for treating pleural mesothelioma.

Chemotherapy and radiation therapy is also used for treating mesothelioma; these treatment procedures can be used individually or in conjunction with surgeries.

Mesothelioma latency period: Due to extended latency period, often mesothelioma get diagnosed at an advanced stage i.e. stage III or stage IV. In these stages, the mesothelioma treatment does not show effective results and the options available for treatment are also less. The affected cells of this disease can often be found in the person’s abdomen or belly, in the main organ of the cardiovascular system, which is the heart, in the chest cavity, and even in the patient’s testicles. Mesothelium is the name that refers to the lining within these areas of the body that is responsible for providing the organs in these areas a special fluid that is needed for them to adequately be able to move around without becoming injured or damaged. Mesothelioma Cancer is the cancer that affects the mesothelium which is the fine casing present in the lining of the chest and abdominal region and encases organs present in such parts. The fine membrane surrounding the lungs is known as pleura and when the mesothelium of the cell lining of the lungs is affected it is called pleural mesothelioma. Mesothelioma affecting the lining around the abdomen is called peritoneal mesothelioma that is less prevalent in comparison to the pleural mesothelioma. Nearly two thousand annual diagnosis of mesothelioma are recorded just from the United Kingdom alone. Malignant Mesothelioma A Rare Cancer: Culprit Asbestos
Malignant Mesothelioma also called as ‘asbestos cancer’, is an atypical kind of cancer that is detected in the cell lining (mesothelium ) of the heart, lungs, abdomen or the inner reproductive organs. Being exposed to airborne asbestos fibers or particles raises the chances of contracting malignant mesothelioma. As mesothelial tumors are atypically benign, cancerous pernicious mesothelioma is generally called as ‘mesothelioma’ or offhandedly ‘meso’. The mesothelium acts as the protective casing for several organs in the body facilitating friction-free movement in-between the organs during the times of expansion and relaxation of the lungs or the heart beating. In US alone many cases of Mesothelioma are reported every year and patients often end up filing mesothelioma lawsuit. Mesothelioma  [...]
