What Is Testicular Cancer?

The cancer type originating from the testes or testicles of a man is known as testicular cancer. Testes are glands situated within the scrotum of men; these glands are responsible for producing sperm required for reproduction and male sexual hormones. Testicular cancer is a rare cancer type; however, in USA, this cancer type is the most common form of cancer affecting men between 15 and 34years of age. Usually, cancer affects any one of the testicles.

Majority of the cases of testicular cancer is treatable. It is also possible to treat this cancer type even when it spreads outside the testicle. Based on the location of the disease, testicular cancer can have 3 stages:

Stage 1: In this stage the cancer stays confined within the testicle.

Stage 2: Stage 2 of testicular cancer sees the cancer reaching lymph nodes of the patient's abdomen.

Stage 3: In this stage the cancer spreads to other body parts like brain, bones, liver and lungs.

Based on the stage of testicular cancer and kind of cells affected by the cancer, the doctor decides the treatment mode for the patient.

What are symptoms of testicular cancer? The common signs of the disease include the following:

  • Enlargement or lumps in any one of the testicles
  • Experiencing heaviness within the scrotum
  • Dull ache around the groin area or abdomen
  • Sudden fluid collection in scrotum
  • Enlargement of breasts, which might be accompanied by reddening of the area
  • Discomfort and pain in the scrotum or testicle

Although no specific causes of testicular cancer have been identified by cancer researchers till date, they have informed us about certain risk factors of the disease. They are:

Cryptorchidism: Cryptorchidism is a condition marked by presence of an undescended testicle. Tests get formed within the abdominal cavity of every male in time of fetal development. These glands generally descend into scrotum before the baby is born. Babies with birth defects might have testicles that do not descend. Men with such problems are at higher risk of developing testicular cancer compared to men who have normally descended testicles. This risk persists even after the testicles get relocated into scrotum through surgery. However, most men diagnosed with testicular cancer do not possess any history of having undescended testicles.

Klinefelter's syndrome: It is a condition, which results in abnormal growth of the testicles. Klinefelter's syndrome is a risk factor for testicular cancer.

Family history: If you have any of your close family members with testicular cancer, you are at increased risk of getting the disease.

Age: This cancer type is more common among younger men, especially the teens.

Race: White men are more susceptible towards developing testicular cancer compared to the black men.

Testicular Cancer and Infertility
Cancer that is seen in the tissues of the testicles is called the testicular cancer. This is very common in the young and the middle aged men. Most of the testicular cancer begins in the germ cells and this cancerous growth is called the testicular germ cell tumours. There are newer cases of deaths due to testicular cancers in the United States in the past year in 2012. This is a condition that also has the highest number of cured people and so for those who are suffering from this it is a relief. Testicles sometimes develop lumps but not all lumps are tumours and not all tumours are malignant either. There are other conditions that occur which could actually be a little painful but ultimately the condition would be non cancerous. Most of the men fear that due to testicular cancer they could  [...]
