Acute lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL)
Leukemia is blood cancer that develops due to unrestrained growth and variation in the healthy blood cells. Acute lymphocytic leukemia or acute lymphoid leukemia or acute lymphoblastic leukemia is a cancer inflicting the lymphocytes (a form of white blood cell) that helps in maintaining optimal immunity levels in the body. ALL has rapid appearance and progression and those having ALL need to be treated promptly. ALL is widely diagnosed in infancy and among adults below fifty years of age, however it could arise in any age group.
The bone marrow is the malleable, red tissue present in the interior of large-sized bones where the production of lymphocytes takes place. Lymphocytes present in the bloodstream, lymph nodes and spleen combat infections arising due to bacteria and viruses. Those having ALL do not have new-fangled lymphocytes gaining maturity; however continue to stay as undeveloped cells known as lymphoblasts. Lymphocytes are of 3 kinds namely T, B and NK (natural killer) cells. Usually, T cells combat infections by triggering other cells present in the immune system and by obliterating infection-ridden cells; B cells produce antibodies and NK cells combat microbial and cancerous cells. Nearly eighty-five percent cases of ALL are due to the B-cell sub-form and nearly fifteen percent cases of ALL are of the T-cell sub-form. The NK-cell sub-form is atypically found.
In those individuals having ALL, anomalous cells swarm the other normal cell forms present in the bone marrow thus hindering red blood cells (oxygen-carriers) from being produced, other forms of white blood cells and platelets (chief constituents responsible for blood to clot). Hence, all those having ALL could suffer from anemia (due to inadequate red blood cells), prone to catching infections (dearth of a form of white blood cells – neutrophils which clash with the bacterial forms) and easily bruising or bleeding due to low platelet count. There could be accruement of the lymphoblasts in an individual’s lymph tissues leading to the swell up in the glands. There could be a number of cells which could lay siege on other vital organs inclusive of the brain, liver or the testicular area among males.
The ALL spreading to other body parts doesn’t essentially indicate that the leukemia is in the final stages as acute leukemia is generally present all through the body during diagnosis.
Figures
ALL is widespread among kids and constitutes nearly seventy percent of all the cases of childhood leukemia. The 5-year comparative rate of survival among grown-ups having ALL lies between forty to sixty-six percent which is dependent of multiple factors inclusive of biological aspects of the ailment and how old the individual is.
