Common Blood Cancer Symptoms You Should Know

Posted In Blood Cancer on February 18, 2010 No Comment

In order to know if you may be a victim of blood cancer it is important to know what the blood cancer symptoms are. Although there are various types of blood cancer there are some symptoms that are similar in each type. To be able to properly diagnose the specific type you may be afflicted with it is important to know which symptoms you are experiencing.

Some of the symptoms that may be experienced with all types of blood cancer include night sweats, weight loss that you can’t explain, numbness in your legs, fever without other signs of illness, swollen or tender lymph nodes, pain in the bones and joints especially in the areas of the back, head and ribs, unexplained bruising, elevated levels of calcium present in the blood caused by bones deteriorating, excessive or free bleeding and extreme fatigue for no apparent reason. Other symptoms may include infections that keep coming back like pneumonia, skin infections and bladder or kidney infections.

Most of these symptoms alone do not necessarily indicate that you have some form of blood cancer however if you are experiencing several of these symptoms then that may be a possibility.

blood cancer symptomsAlong with the blood cancer symptoms there are certain risk factors that may be associated with contracting this illness. Among these risk factors are exposure to chemicals like benzene or even chemicals like those used in chemotherapy treatments that may be used for other types of cancers. Smoking may also be a factor in increasing the risk of contracting blood cancer.

Individuals who suffer from Down syndrome may also be more likely to develop some types of blood cancer. Other types of blood cancer are generally found in older people such as those that are over the age of 60. African Americans are twice as likely to develop certain blood cancers as most white people and men are generally more at risk than women. White men are at a higher risk than other populations of encountering some forms of this disease.

As well as the varying type of symptoms of this disease there are also different treatments for different types of blood cancers. What may work well for one type may not be as effective for another. This is why it is important to know which symptoms you have so that it may be properly diagnosed and thus properly treated.

If you are consistently more tired than usual or have lost weight and can’t explain why and experience bone and joint pain, lack of appetite, nausea, constipation and are overly thirsty and urinating more frequently it may be signs of blood cancer symptoms. It is important to seek the advice of a health care professional as soon as you notice these symptoms. The sooner a diagnosis is made the better the chances of being able to slow down or stop the progression of whatever  blood cancer you may be afflicted with. Early detection is one of the most successful ways of treating these cancers effectively.
