What Do The Early Symptoms of Brain Cancer Include?

Posted In Brain Cancer on March 1, 2010 One Comment

Brain cancer is a disease in which cancer cells form in the brain which leads to the formation of tumors. These tumors can directly affect many essential functions of the brain including those relevant to memory, muscle control and feeling or sensation. Not all brain tumors are cancerous but the ones that are made up of cancerous cells are called malignant tumors. When a tumor is made up of cells that are not cancerous they are referred to as benign and usually do not cause any problems.

Early symptoms of brain cancer may include things like difficulty walking, frequent loss of balance, difficulty talking or hearing, nausea, loss of appetite, memory loss, weakness, changes in eyesight, vomiting, headaches and motion sickness. Some other symptoms that may be noticed are changes in a person’s alertness, personality or even mental capacity.

These symptoms alone however are not conclusive in diagnosing brain cancer because most if not all of these symptoms can also be indicative of other less serious health issues. It is important when encountering these or any other symptoms that a health care professional be consulted so that proper testing can be performed.

early symptoms of brain cancerNot all individuals will demonstrate or show early symptoms of brain cancer. In these cases it is very important that any changes in behavior or personality be noted and discussed with your doctor. Even if these are not related to brain cancer there could be another problem that needs attention.

Because many of these symptoms can be caused by other health conditions there are other tests that may be performed in order to determine the presence of brain cancer. Some of the most common tests include CT scans, MRI or magnetic resonance imaging as well as white blood cell counts and microscopic examination of cerebrospinal fluid. In some cases a biopsy may be used to diagnose brain cancer.

After the initial diagnosis of brain cancer has been made the next step is to determine how much of the brain is affected and if it has spread to any other areas. This is an important process as this information is necessary to determine what treatment will be most effective.

After brain cancer has been diagnosed and stage has been determined your doctor will discuss treatment options with you. Several things are considered when determining the treatment of brain cancer.

The most common treatment of brain cancer is to remove the area that is affected through surgery. This is done by removing the part of the brain that contains the tumor. In cases where this is not possible other treatment options may be used such as chemotherapy and radiation treatment. In some cases all of these treatment methods may be used in combination to ensure that the cancerous tumor does not return.

It is imperative to seek medical attention at the first sign of any of the early symptoms of brain cancer. The earlier this disease is detected and diagnosed the better the chances of treatment being successful.
