Have You Wondered What Mesothelioma is?

Posted In Mesothelioma on March 26, 2010 No Comment

If you have, then you are most certainly not alone. Mesothelioma is a specific form of malignant cancer that begins within the body’s cells that line various different parts of the individual’s body. The affected cells of this disease can often be found in the person’s abdomen or belly, in the main organ of the cardiovascular system, which is the heart, in the chest cavity, and even in the patient’s testicles. Mesothelium is the name that refers to the lining within these areas of the body that is responsible for providing the organs in these areas a special fluid that is needed for them to adequately be able to move around without becoming injured or damaged. An example would be the way in which the lungs of a person’s body move, as the normal process of breathing occurs.

Not all tumors that are found within the mesothelium are cancerous. Some of these tumors end up being diagnosed as benign, and then there are some of the tumors that do end up being diagnosed as cancerous. These are the tumors that are generally referred to as malignant mesothelioma. Below you will find a list of the main three types of this devastating disease.

  • Mixed, which is also known as biphasic

this form contains features of both of the types listed below. There are as many as 3 to 4 cases out of every 10 cases that are diagnosed as being the mixed type.

  • Sarcomatoid, which is otherwise known as fibrous

There are only about 1 to 2 cases in 10 that are diagnosed as being sarcomatoid.

  • Epithelioid

This is the type that is the most common. It is also one that will often have a much happier prognosis than the other two types.

mesotheliomaThere are as many as 3 out of 4 cases of this type of disease that will begin in the cavity of the patient’s chest. Out of all the cases that are diagnosed with mesothelioma disease, as many as 20% are those that have first started in the belly or abdomen of the patient, which are commonly referred to by a large number of physicians as peritoneal mesotheliomas. Two other areas of the body that this serious disease will generally occur at, but on very rare occasions would be the testicles of the patient, or in the area around the individual’s heart.

It is very important that mesothelioma disease be treated as soon as possible and many physicians will also treat this condition very aggressively so that the patient will be provided with the most benefit. This is why it is extremely important to consult with your family health care provider as soon as you begin to notice any types of symptoms that may be the warning signs of mesothelioma. The sooner that this type of condition is brought to the attention of experienced specialized physicians, the sooner that various treatment options can be recommended to the patient, and the higher your chances will be for effective treatment.
