Mesothelioma Symptoms & Stages
Mesothelioma Cancer is the cancer that affects the mesothelium which is the fine casing present in the lining of the chest and abdominal region and encases organs present in such parts.
The fine membrane surrounding the lungs is known as pleura and when the mesothelium of the cell lining of the lungs is affected it is called pleural mesothelioma. Mesothelioma affecting the lining around the abdomen is called peritoneal mesothelioma that is less prevalent in comparison to the pleural mesothelioma.
Nearly two thousand annual diagnosis of mesothelioma are recorded just from the United Kingdom alone.
Mesothelioma pleural leads to the thickening of the fine membranes of the pleura and could exert pressure inward on to the lungs leading to fluid build up in-between the outer and inner pleural layers called as pleural effusion.
Peritoneal Mesothelioma leads to the cell membranes encasing the organs in the abdomen to thicken and fluid to accumulate in that area known as ascites thus leading to the abdomen appearing swelled up.
Mesothelioma Symptoms:
- Mesothelioma generally originates as several small-sized lumpy or nodular appearances in the pleura that might be missed out during scanning or X-rays till the time they become quite big in size.
- The chief signs of pleural mesothelioma involve feeling breathless and pain in the chest region.
Few of the individuals feel hoarseness in their voice and experience unremitting coughing.- Peritoneal mesothelioma mostly leads to swell up and pain felt in the abdominal region.
- The two kinds of mesothelioma could lead to other wide-ranging signs like a depleted craving for food, excessive perspiration particularly during the night times, weight reduction and fatigue.
As several of such mesothelioma symptoms could bear analogous resemblance to other kinds of ailments, hence a battery of diagnostic tests could be performed to corroborate the presence of mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma Staging:
The staging is the terminology employed for illustrating the size and extent of metastasis past the initial location. Having knowledge of the degree of metastasis is helpful to the doctors in ascertaining the optimal line of treatment.
The widely employed staging system for mesothelioma is:
Stage 1:
This localised malignant mesothelioma is present in the pleura close to the lungs, heart or the diaphragm.
Stages 2, 3 and 4 are indicators of the advanced malignant mesothelioma.
Stage 2:
When the cancer has metastasized past the pleura and reached the lymph nodes present in the chest region.
Stage 3:
The cancer has metastasized inside either the wall of the chest, the central part of the chest, heart, diaphragm, the lining of the abdomen and the closely placed lymph nodes.
Stage 4:
The cancer has reached the distantly placed organs or tissues.
The staging for peritoneal mesothelioma is done employing the TNM system wherein T stands for tumor volume, N depicts if the cancer has metastasized till the lymph nodes and M reveals if the cancer has developed in any other areas of the body.
