What is Mesothelioma Cancer?

Posted In Mesothelioma on March 29, 2010 No Comment

Mesothelioma cancer is a specific form of cancer that does not occur nearly as often as many other types of cancer. This is a type of cancer that can ultimately affect the patient’s abdomen, the lung’s lining, and the heart. In the United States alone, there are as many as 3,000 cases where physicians have diagnosed patients with this painful disease. Out of all other types of cancers that an individual can acquire, 3% of cancer patients that are diagnosed, suffer from the painful symptoms that are most commonly associated with this disease. Sadly, once a patient has started noticing the occurrence of bothersome symptoms that lead to a physical examination, various types of tests that are required for an adequate diagnosis, and then finally the proper diagnosis, the individual usually does not live longer than one year. This however is largely dependent on how quickly a diagnosis of mesothelioma cancer can be obtained, and the aggression that is used in the patient’s treatment.

The cause for mesothelioma disease is from the exposure to the harmful material that is known as asbestos. When an individual breathes in the asbestos containing fibers, or they are ingested, they can easily become lodged within the individual’s body cavities. This is a problem that generally results in serious infections and inflammation.

The symptoms that a patient will endure will be determined by the specific area of the body that the disease is located. Below are some of the most common symptoms that many patients suffer from when they have been diagnosed with this type of disease.

  • Pericardial symptoms would include night sweats, heart palpitations, problems with breathing normally, irregular heartbeat, and chest pain.
  • Pleural symptoms that would include lumps that can be felt beneath the skin of the chest, shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pain, and persistent cough.
  • Peritoneal symptoms that would include nausea, weight loss, obstruction of the bowels, swelling, and pain in the abdomen.
  • Testicular symptoms that would include testicular lumps that may either be very painful or not painful at all.

Mesothelioma CancerIn many cases, individuals that have acquired mesothelioma cancer do not even experience any type of symptoms for as long as 20 or even 50 years after they have been exposed to the asbestos. There are many times that the symptoms the individual experiences will appear to be a condition that is not serious at all. This is a problem that can also make it very hard to obtain a proper diagnose of the disease.

If an individual has been exposed to the harmful material that is known as asbestos at any time during their lifetime, it is extremely important to pay close attention to the signs that the body may be displaying. The sooner that a specialized physician is able to conduct an exam and perform necessary testing that is needed to diagnose this dangerous type of disease, the more likelihood there will be in treatment options that will offer the most effectiveness to the patient.
