Sunbed Use among Teens Doubles Skin Cancer Risk

Teens who opt for sunbeds are almost twofold as likely to be identified with a highly lethal type of skin cancer as compared to the ones who kept away from tanning salons altogether, a research has uncovered.

The study shows that the sooner sunbed usage is started, higher is the risk of getting a fatal melanoma prior to the age of forty.

This has shown that those people who commenced prior to turning twenty have an eighty-eight percent greater likelihood of being detected with a mortal melanoma as compared to individuals never having opted for sunbeds.

The research was carried out by investigators from the Univ. of Melbourne involving over six hundred individuals that had been identified with skin cancer in-between the age bracket from eighteen and thirty-nine. They observed that twenty-three percent of the people had opted for sunbeds during some stage in their lifetime and on an average had begun the use of sunbed by twenty-two years of age.

The risk of getting melanoma was noted to be around forty-one percent more among those people who used sunbeds. The risk shot up proportionately to the frequent usage of sunbeds.

In case the study entrants had opted for sunbeds prior to twenty-five years of age, skin cancer risk was sixty-four percent more in comparison to those who never used sunbeds.

The study scientists have written that their findings suggest that being exposed to ultraviolet radiation arising from sunbeds is a risk for early-inception melanoma, especially melanoma identified in the age group of eighteen and twenty-nine years old.

Speaker Ed Yong stated that even though this research is comparatively small-scaled, it indicates that a sunbed user might have a greater risk of getting melanoma prior to forty years of age and also later on in his/her life.
